Obituary
Mrs. Sophia Heiden nee Karsten,
was born April 14, 1840, in Mecklen-
burg-Schwerin, Germany.
She came when quite young with
her parents to America.
In 1857 she was married to Mr. Hen-
ry Heiden in Iowa City. As the result
of this union there were nine children
three sons and six daughters, one of
whom died in infancy.
About eight years they lived in and
near Iowa City, and then they moved
to Benton County where they made
their home until March, 1902,
they moved to Marengo.
Her suffering the last days was in-
tense, but was borne with fortitude
and resignation, with marked confi-
dence and hope of that bright home
beyond where she shall soon be with
Jesus.
She was a consistent member of the
German Lutheran church, and was
very highly respected by her neigh-
bors and friends.
All that medical skill and kind and
loving care could do was done with-
out avail.
On Monday evening, August 16, as
her husband and some of her children
were gathered about her bedside, she
bid them each good by. She died last
Tuesday, August 17, at 7:30 p.m. aged
69 years, 4 months and 3 days.
She leaves a sorrowful husband,
three sons, Henry, of Clark, S. D.,
Louis of Garrison, and John of St.
Clair Township, Benton County, and
five daughters, Mrs. L. Juergemeyer
of Benton County, Mrs. Wm. Ebert, of
near Blairstown, Mrs. Katie Hopper,
of near Watkins, Mrs. Charles Pfaffle
and Mrs. H. F. Bartle, of South Dako-
ta. Also, 26 grand-children and 9
great grandchildren.
The funeral services were held on
Saturday, August 21, at 10 o'clock a.
m. at the Lutheran church in Maren-
go and was conducted by the Rev.
Geo. Bayer, after which the remains
were taken to the Conn cemetery in
Washington township for interment
by a large number of friends and rela-
tives.
CARD OF THANKS
We desire to extend our heartfelt
thynks to the kind friends and neigh-
bors who have rendered assitance dur-
ing the illness and after the death of
our beloved wife and mother.
